A historic moment unfolds with the 100th Senate meeting of IIIT-B

A momentous chapter unfolded in the history of IIIT-B as we marked the 100th Senate meeting—a symbol of our journey toward academic and institutional excellence. These Senate meetings have been the cornerstone of our growth, shaping IIIT-B into a beacon of innovation, quality education, and values-driven leadership.

The landmark resolutions of the Senate have guided us through transformative milestones, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and principled governance. This occasion is also an opportunity to honor the dedication of Prof. S. S. Prabhu, Prof. Debabrata Das, Prof. Balaji Prathasarathy, and Prof. Srinath Srinivasa, whose enduring service through all 100 meetings has been instrumental in our journey.

As we celebrate this historic moment, we renew our resolve to build upon this legacy, continuing to advance knowledge and impact for generations to come.

IIIT-B Celebrates Bharatiya Bhasha Diwas: A Focus on Technologies for Indian Languages

IIIT-Bangalore commemorated Bharatiya Bhasha Diwas, with a special focus on “Technologies In, For, and Through Indian Languages.” This day honors the birth anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati and celebrates India’s rich linguistic heritage, fostering multilingualism.

The event featured a series of insightful technical talks and demonstrations, showcasing advancements in Indian language technologies. Eminent speakers from both academia and industry shared their expertise on various aspects of language processing, with a focus on Indic languages.

The event commenced with insightful opening remarks by Prof. Srinath Srinivasa, Dean (R&D), setting the stage for an engaging session. This was followed by a compelling keynote address by Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya from IIT-Bombay on the topic “Low Resource Machine Translation of Indic Languages.” During his presentation, Prof. Bhattacharyya explored the challenges and innovative techniques in Natural Language Processing (NLP), emphasizing strategies to address resource constraints in translating Indic languages.

Dr. Shakira Jabeen presented a talk on “Multiple Languages of India, Multilingualism, Constitutional Guarantees, and Preventing Language Death.” She provided an insightful analysis of the social dynamics surrounding languages and highlighted strategies for preventing language extinction.

Mr. Revendranath T from Mphasis discussed the challenges and opportunities of Large Language Models (LLMs) for Indic languages in his talk. Meanwhile, Niharikasri Parasa focused on the progress, existing gaps, and future directions in Indic Natural Language Processing (NLP).

IIIT-B organized a Faculty Development Programme featuring Dr. Manjit Singh, a renowned Quality Assurance expert, as the resource person. The session covered key topics, including Quality Assurance in Higher Education, the Binary Accreditation Framework of NAAC, and Institution Ranking at both national and international levels. All faculty members actively participated in the engaging and insightful session, which provided valuable knowledge and perspectives on enhancing institutional quality and performance.

Staff Development Programme at IIIT-B

IIIT-B organized a Staff Development Programme featuring Dr. Manjit Singh, an expert in Quality Assurance, as the resource person. The session focused on critical topics such as Quality Assurance in Higher Education at both institutional and program levels, with national and international perspectives, as well as Quality Audits as a means of enhancing quality. All staff members of IIIT-B actively participated in the session, which proved to be highly insightful and enriched their understanding of quality enhancement in higher education.

ICVGIP 2024 Concludes Successfully at IIIT-B: A Landmark Event in Computer Vision and AI

IIIT-Bangalore successfully hosted the 15th Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing (ICVGIP 2024). Recognized as India’s premier conference in the field, ICVGIP brought together over 300 participants from academia and industry, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Organized in association with the Indian Unit for Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence (IUPRAI), an affiliate of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), the conference featured a wide range of activities, including technical paper presentations, plenary talks by globally renowned experts, and the IUPRAI Doctoral Dissertation Award ceremony.

The plenary talks were a major highlight, with speakers such as Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos (Technical University Munich), Prof. Alan C. Bovik (The University of Texas at Austin), and Prof. Deva Ramanan (Carnegie Mellon University) delivering thought-provoking insights on cutting-edge topics such as optical imaging, visual quality, and multimodal spatial intelligence.

As a landmark event, ICVGIP 2024 reinforced IIIT-B’s position as a hub for innovation and thought leadership in the domains of computer vision, graphics, and image processing.

Tarkam: A New Centre for Data-Driven Discourse Launched at IIIT-B

IIIT-Bangalore proudly launched Tarkam – Centre for Data-driven Discourse, reaffirming its commitment to excellence at the intersection of technology, data, and society. The inaugural event witnessed insights from Prof. Debabrata Das, Director, IIIT-B and Prof. Srinivasa, Dean (R&D), IIIT-B alongside discussions with participants from diverse sectors.

With Prof. Srinath Srinivasa, Mr.  Anand Sahasranaman, Mr. Bharath M. Palavalli, Mr. Rishabh Verma and Ms. Sruthi Krishnan as founding members, Tarkam addresses the pressing challenges faced by civil society in leveraging data effectively. Despite the recognized potential of data, its use often remains limited to proposals and reports, with efforts scattered across varying levels of maturity in data understanding.

Tarkam aspires to bridge this gap by creating a collaborative platform for civil society organizations, including academia, NGOs, and governmental bodies, to deliberate and build robust, data-driven discourse. Tarkam is poised to tackle the challenges of civil society through thoughtful engagement, innovative technology, and enhanced data literacy.

ADCOM 2024: Advancing Responsible AI at IIIT-Bangalore

IIIT-Bangalore hosted the 29th Annual International Conference on Advanced Computing and Communications (ADCOM 2024). Organized by the Advanced Computing and Communications Society (ACCS), ADCOM 2024 delved into the theme of “Responsible AI,” addressing critical issues around the ethical deployment of artificial intelligence and its role in shaping the future of technology and society.

The event featured 21 research paper presentations, 10 short papers by Ph.D. students, and 12 insightful keynotes by industry experts. A highlight of the conference was a fireside chat with Prof. Virginia Dignum (Umeå University, Sweden) and the “Ignite AI StartUp Pitch Fest,” where 15 teams pitched their ideas to a panel of investors.

Preceding the conference, a workshop on “Ethical Software Engineering Practices” and a full-day tutorial on “Deep Learning with Keras 3” drew enthusiastic participation, offering hands-on learning opportunities. ADCOM 2024 proved to be a pivotal event in the field of advanced computing, fostering rich discussions and collaborations. IIIT-Bangalore’s successful hosting of this prestigious conference underscored its leadership in advancing ethical and responsible AI practices, contributing to a future where technology benefits all.

Merry December: IIIT-B Celebrates the Spirit of Christmas

As December painted the IIIT-B campus in hues of festive joy, the jingle bells rang loud, heralding the magic of Christmas. Draped in the warmth of red and white, the campus came alive with the spirit of togetherness and celebration. Students, faculty, and staff gathered like a big happy family, their hearts aglow with cheer. The air resonated with melodious Christmas carols and the infectious rhythm of “Jingle Bells,” while laughter and camaraderie lit up every corner.

Santa made a delightful appearance, showering chocolates like snowflakes of joy. Lively games, soulful music, and scrumptious Christmas snacks added to the merriment, making the day sparkle like a star atop the holiday season. Truly, the celebrations at IIIT-B were a symphony of joy, capturing the magic and warmth of December’s festive embrace.
