Here is a journey of Mr. Nitin Tailor, Alumnus of IIIT-Bangalore who pursued his master’s degree during 2007-2009 with the goal of landing a prestigious job to experiencing a transformative shift in perspective ended up in receiving Gujarat Changemaker Award for his contribution impacting the society in a positive manner.

The Call to Serve

During a research stint at Malmö University in Sweden, exposure to diverse cultures and introspection about his own knowledge of India led to a deep desire to reconnect with his roots. Upon returning to India, despite having a promising career at Tyfone Inc., he felt unfulfilled by the material pursuit of success. This prompted a decision to leave his lucrative career, reconnect with nature by spending time on the banks of the Narmada River, and ultimately found the Serve Happiness Foundation. Inspired by the river’s meaning of the word, Narm (happiness) and Da (donor), he committed to dedicating his life to serving society and creating positive change in the society.

Mr. Nitin says, “My experience in Sweden and traveling across Europe deeply transformed my outlook on life. Representing India at Malmö University ignited a strong desire to contribute to my country. When I returned to Bangalore, I saw many people trapped in a cycle of materialism and dissatisfaction, despite their high-paying jobs. This made me question the true purpose of life—whether it’s only about financial success. At the same time, my grassroots work in India, witnessing social challenges and struggles, solidified my commitment to make a meaningful impact. I realized my path should focus on serving happiness and uplifting others rather than chasing personal gains.” Thus came to the existence of ‘Serve Happiness’, The NGO serves as a platform for volunteers to use their free time constructively for society and the underprivileged. It creates a network connecting organizations, places of need and volunteers, creating networking through both face-to-face and online interactions.

One of the significant imitative of the Serve Happiness Foundation is Prerna Yatra that takes individuals on inspirational journeys across India to explore its beauty, culture and heritage while instilling cultural values and spreading happiness. These yatras connect participants with real-life role models, inspiring positive societal change. Additionally, the foundation runs eco-friendly campaigns and workshops on social entrepreneurship, empowering youth, women, and communities to launch sustainable social projects such as making eco-friendly paper bags, river cleanliness, cycling, waste management etc.

In August, Mr. Nitin received Gujarat Changemaker award for his initiative like Prerna Yatra. The Changemaker award honors individuals or organizations for their impactful contributions to social transformation in areas like health, education, poverty alleviation and gender equality. It celebrates efforts that drive positive societal change and promote inclusivity.

“Being recognized as a Gujarat Changemaker reignited my passion and affirmed that I am on the right path. It inspired me to scale my efforts nationally and globally, collaborating with others to expand my impact. This journey has shown me that while challenging, the road less traveled is the most rewarding. I remain committed to bringing happiness and positive change, knowing each step brings us closer to a brighter, compassionate world,” he adds.

Essential Qualities for Youth to Make a Meaningful Impact on Society

Today’s youth are knowledgeable, resourceful and open-minded, but their true potential lies in focusing their energy on nation-building through innovative startups that address societal challenges. Balancing modern aspirations with strong ethics, cultural respect, and values will enable them to drive transformative change and lead the nation toward a brighter future.

(Mr. Nitin met Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in 2015, who graciously launched the Narmada Prerna Yatra report with his esteemed signature.)

He opines that balancing conventional careers with the drive to make a difference in the world to be the top priority for the current young generation. As a Message to the younger generation, he says, “Don’t stress about changing the world—focus on work that aligns with your heart. True fulfillment comes from being authentic and staying true to yourself. Find joy in your job, avoid others’ expectations, and embrace your own path. Only by being yourself can you genuinely contribute to others’ well-being.”

IIIT-B Shaped His Commitment to Make Positive Societal Impact

(Mr. Nitin was awarded Late Sri. N. Rama Rao Gold Medal and Entrepreneur of the year award on the Convocation day of IIIT-B on July 6, 2014.)

He feels fortunate to have studied at IIIT-Bangalore, where he met amazing friends from diverse backgrounds and was inspired by professors dedicated to India’s development. Meeting role models like Mr. Narayana Murthy and Mrs. Sudha Murthy left a lasting impact, motivating him to create work that benefits society. Their contributions remind him of the power of giving back and the importance of working toward a greater purpose.
