Prof. Ananda Y R
Assistant Professor
Prof. Ananda is really impressed by IIIT-Bangalore’s setup—the top-notch infrastructure, strong industry ties, and the bright, sharp students. He thinks these things make it a great place to work. Before coming here, he spent three years teaching at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore, and then went on to do his PhD at IIT Guwahati.
He specializes in VLSI, with a focus on MEM computing devices like MEMristors, MEMinductors, and MEMcapacitors. These tiny devices are key to the future of high-performance computing, especially in areas like AI’s analog processing, synaptic neural networks, neuromorphic computing, ultra-dense memory storage and bio-inspired circuits. They work a bit like brain synapses, acting as non-linear elements that can store and process information at the same time.
Prof. Ananda aims to use his previous experience and knowledge to benefit both the students and the institute. He plans to engage in teaching, research, and securing grants for his projects, contributing to publications and conferences at an international level.
He highlights the advantage of IIIT-Bangalore’s proximity to industries, which facilitates easy collaboration with industry professionals and keeps him updated on current industrial trends. This collaboration will inform his research and provide valuable insights for his students.
On a personal note, Prof. Ananda is an avid reader interested in personality development, self-improvement, human health science, environmental science, and soil science. He is particularly inspired by the works of Thich Nhat Hanh, a spiritual leader whose books focus on mindfulness and consciousness.
Prof. Ananda’s educational journey began in a village government school, followed by the Rural Education Society (RES), Kanakapura for his high school education. He completed his engineering degree at Sri Bhagavan Mahaveer Jain College of Engineering and pursued an M.Tech at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, where he developed a keen interest in VLSI and gained significant research exposure.
After working as an assistant professor at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, he joined IIT Guwahati as a JRF and later pursued his PhD there. His research focused on new electronic devices, including memristors, MEM inductors, and MEM capacitors. Despite initial struggles, he improved his research approach and successfully published his work in reputed IEEE journals and conferences. His dedication earned him the Best Thesis Award.
After completing his PhD, he joined IIIT Bangalore as an assistant professor, aiming to contribute to the institute’s growth and the scientific research community. Prof. Ananda expresses his gratitude for the positive and supportive environment at IIIT-Bangalore and is committed to advancing scientific research and helping the institute succeed.
Prof. Ananda’s journey reflects a blend of dedication to research, a passion for teaching, and a continuous quest for personal and professional growth.
