Celebration of National Science Day

The ECLIPSE Astronomy Club at IIIT-Bangalore marked National Science Day with a thought-provoking session titled “The Shadow of the Lab: Navigating the Ethics of Scientific Discovery.” The session went beyond formulas and telescopes, inviting students to reflect on how science truly evolves, not in isolation, but through people, choices, and responsibility.

The talk unfolded as a story of how modern astronomy was built step by step. It began with Tycho Brahe’s remarkably precise observations of the night sky. Though he did not formulate sweeping theories, his commitment to accurate data laid the groundwork for future breakthroughs. Using Tycho’s observations, Johannes Kepler went on to derive the laws of planetary motion, showing that planets move in elliptical orbits rather than perfect circles. What began as careful data collection transformed into mathematical laws that reshaped humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.

From there, the session explored the broader “flow of science,” how ideas progress from theoryto data, from data to laws, from laws to evidence, and ultimately to unification. This chainreached a powerful culmination with Isaac Newton, who unified these ideas under the law of gravitation, explaining both the motion of celestial bodies and everyday phenomena through a single framework.

A particularly striking moment was the reflection on Newton’s famous words: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” The quote served as a reminder that knowledge is never built alone. Every breakthrough stands on years, sometimes centuries, of effort by those who came before. Science advances because each generation contributes its piece to a much larger story.

Following the session, participants gathered for a star-gazing session on campus. With the club’s telescope set up under the night sky, students observed Jupiter along with its visible moons, and a few prominent stars. The evening ended on a meaningful note, as students moved from learning about the giants of astronomy to looking up and witnessing the universe.
